As a mother with two kids, I find it a necessity to insure my kids’ health and future. Who wouldn’t? Like any other moms out there, I only wanted the best of life for them. I scouted for the good school near our area for my first born and eventually send him there for preschool. I make sure that we religiously had their vaccines and boosters. And right now, I am scouting for insurances for them. Good enough, I was able to find a company who offers Term Life Insurance in an affordable price. I can even get a quote from them within a matter of minutes; all I have to do is dial their toll free number 1-800-939-0710. I can Buy Life Insurance without the hassle and expense of medical examinations. I loathe filling out long medical questionnaires and I find it time-consuming to get medical exams required. This has been understood by NoMedExamLifeInsurance.com, and so they are one of the first companies in America licensed to sell no medical exam life insurances. This is ideal for individuals who need the coverage right away, individuals who have health complications that make getting ordinary life insurance more difficult, people who – for personal or religious reasons – want or need to avoid lab test, needles and other procedures, and others. Life Insurance No Exam, love it!

Baptismal gift
My colleague asked me a couple of days ago to design a baptismal invitation for her nephew based in Canada. I eagerly accepted the task and made two designs. After which, the designs were sent for approval to her sister. I just receive a mail today from my colleague advising me that one of the designs I made was approved by her sister. The sister was even asking if I could design a thank you card to match the invitation as well.
At the end of the mail, my colleague asked me what should she gave as baptismal gift for her nephew. If it is not that expensive to ship items to Canada, baby boys clothes are the best answer. However, the shipping fee is more than the actual cost of the item so it is not possible. I told her to make a photo book and have it shipped there. That would surely be most appreciated by her sister. Or, she could fly to Canada and be there on the Christening day itself. Besides, she is one of the godmother of the kid.
Anyhoo, I have to sign off now as I have to make the lay-out of the thank you card in a few minutes. Ciao!
Window shopping
Baby clothing – checked.
Thanks to the Internet, I was able to scout some good deals on infant clothes when I was still pregnant with my daughter last year. It took me months searching high and low for the best brands at cheaper costs of clothes before hitting the check out button. There are actually a lot of things to consider, aside from the price. Some stores even claim the clothes they are selling are organic. Aside from online shops, I also visited a few baby stores in some malls in the metro to check out their garments. Most of the time, I do not go home empty handed which makes my husband whine. But whenever I show him the price tag, he would stop and agree that my purchases are a steal. Besides, I don’t purchase those that wouldn’t be in use. We learned our lesson the hard way when we go all out purchasing almost all baby items available when I was still pregnant with my first born. Most items were not put in use. Gawd! We were like crazy people who threw our hard earned money as trash. We should have listen to our beloved mothers, the experts.

The pains of weaning
I feel guilty. I feel I am a bad mommy.
It has been three days now that I don’t let baby C nurse on me. I am currently taking a magic coffee thus making my milk not anymore safe for her. And so, I wean her cold turkey style. Thankfully, I still didn’t feel the swelling breasts including the pain that reaches until the arm pit. I can still raise my arm, yahoo!
However, baby C started to become restless and almost doesn’t have a good sleep. She became so whiny and extra clingy. I am actually this.close to giving in but I always remind myself not to.
I just hope baby C wouldn’t feel I love her less now that I weaned her. I really feel guilty.

Back to school
The two-week vacation of my son has finally ended. In a couple of hours, he’s back to school. And what better way to welcome the kids back is to give them an exam that was supposed to be given last October 19. Ain’t that cool? Haha!
Anyways, he’s very excited to go back to school and see his friends best friends and his teacher. I just hope his eagerness to go to school will not falter.

A lil shopping
My online friend Peachy had a bargain sale on her Flickr. She was selling pre-loved clothes of her kids. Good thing, my Paypal money is still intact, I was able to score some good deals for my little princess.
Here are the things I bought:
My loots are not yet over $20, isn’t that great? I heard she would still posts a few more items in the coming days so I asked her to just put my items safe as I would look for a few more before she ships it to my address. I’m hoping to grab something for the Kuya in the coming days.

Done!
First half of the school year is officially done. The little boy is in vacation starting today until the 2nd of November. However, they will be greeted by a Language Exam when they come back on the 3rd of November. The exam was supposed to be given last Tuesday, however because of Typhoon Juan, classes were suspended in preschool.
It’ll be two weeks of vacation for him. I’m actually thinking of enrolling him either in E.nopi or Kumon to continue his learning while in vacation. I would love to teach him how to read but my schedule was full this coming weeks. Bad mom, I know. This is the pain of becoming a working mother. Do you have feedbacks which one is better, Kumon or E.nopi?

Joshua’s Field Demo
This is a long, overdue post.
My son had his first ever field demo presentation in their school last 24th of September. Together with the Pre-Junior, they performed twice to the tune of I Gotta Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas. No picture taking was allowed during the first performance to avoid distractions to the kids. Second performance, the parents are allowed to snap away all the want. Here are some photos from the said performance.
And the best part of it, his number one fan was there to cheer him up while he was performing.

How? Why?
How would you answer your toddler’s never ending questions?
My son is now in the stage when he questions a lot of things, most of them from what he observed around him. Most of time, I ran out of answers to his never ending questions. I know his brain is like a sponge where every minute details and information feed on him will be stored forever. And so, I am very much careful and how to answers it although my patience wears out sometimes.
Here are some examples of his questions:
Where does my food go? Where does my milk / water / juice go?
Where does pupu / wiwi came from?
Why do I have booger?
Why does the water moves when I move (pertaining to the water in the pool)?

English speaking
The first and foremost reason why we enrolled my eldest in Ann Arbor Montessori in BF is for him to learn English faster. I got frustrated when I wasn’t successful teaching him how to speak English in an early age. I so badly wanted to have then an English-speaking son. He understands the language but is not a speaker of it.
After three months of attending school, I can say we have made the right decision. Although he prefers to speak Tagalog over English, we can still hear him speak English every now and then. Here are some of the examples:
May I go to the restroom?
Please open.
Thank you!
Please open the light.
Don’t bite me.
And oh! I am no more a mommy and the husband is no longer a daddy as he now calls us Mom and Dad, LOL!

His first field trip
We have just received a memo from the school that Joshua and the whole CASA will be having a field trip a day after their field demo. Anyhow, they will be going not far from the Metro, it’ll just be in Laguna. First stop is at Sta. Elena Fun Farm and next is the Nissin Monde Noodle Factory.
My boy is so excited and he was already telling us what food he will bring. We haven’t decided though who shall come with him, me or the husband. As you can see, I am assigned on the night shift and that means I have to file a leave on the night before the trip or I’ll be just a sleeping log during the entire day. Let’s see.. We still have a week to decide on this.

All over the house
Claire started to cruise the house at ten months. By the time she turned eleven months, she was walking on her own. No, she never had the chance to try using a walker. And after she turned one year old just a month ago, she is all over the house. She can climb the stairs which gives us heart attack and usually hides under our dining table. Yes, she can play hide and seek now. I think it’s all because her playmates were all boys including Joshua who treats her as a grown-up – not babyish treatment.
As my mom usually says to me, she can no longer be out of our sight. Here’s what BabyCenter says on how to handle a toddler that loves to climb.
- Provide safe climbing options
- Supervise, but don’t stress out
- Teach your child to climb down
- Accept that kids fall
- Divert and distract
- Climb proof your house
- Discipline effectively

Missing my kids
Tonight is the start of my night shift schedule. It’ll be a long two months for me and my family. The sacrifice of not having “night sleep” is bearable but spending the night without the kids is something I do not know until when I can manage.
I won’t be able to lull them to sleep. My Claire will surely look for me during the wee hours of the morning when she needs to nurse. My Joshua will have no choice but his father to wake him up in the morning and give him a bath before he goes to school.
And when they are all active and hyper during the morning, I am locked in the room and sleeping. Oh, the pains of being a working mother.

Today
is the day of AAM’s culminating program for Buwan ng Wika. Like what I posted here, the CASA pupils were asked to bring Filipino dish good for 5 people for the salo-salo. I was supposed to buy Goldilocks Tropical puto. Yesterday after our shift, I asked my colleague to accompany me to the nearest store near our building only to find out that they have already run out of stock. We went to three more stores around Makati but hear the same line “ubos na po.”
And since it was already way past 7pm and we can’t find a store that sells puto, we went to Glorietta’s foodcourt and saw a stall that makes delightfully happy. I asked the seller if the food is easily spoiled as it’ll be eaten by the kids the next day. She said she won’t just add butter and sugar so it won’t be spoiled. She even commented that there is no need to put the food on the fridge.
The food that solves my problem yesterday was Bibingkinitan. For Php 120, I went home with 6 bibingkas. Been eating this for a long time now but totally forgot about it when I was dead focused on buying puto.

Agape party
In celebration of Joshua’s school’s Buwan ng Wika, all the CASA pupils are requested to bring Filipino food to share with their classmates. The food should be good for 5 children only. Rice will be provided for each class.
At first, I decided to buy the famous Malabon’s Sapin-sapin. However, according to the recent memo the school gave, Joshua needs to bring either bibingka or puto. Of course, I don’t want my mom to get stressed out by preparing bibingka so we decided to buy puto instead.
Our choice is Goldilocks Tropical Puto. The party will be tomorrow so I have to drop by the nearest store before heading home later this afternoon.

What to wear (part 2)
Remember this post about my son’s Linggo ng Wika program on Friday? After searching for a costume for him and ended up borrowing my cousin’s Muslim costume, I was devastated and lost my excitement when I talked to his teacher yesterday morning. According to Teacher Angel, it was only the girls who are required to wear costumes while the boys wear their usual PE uniforms. They still need to bring Filipino dish though.
Good thing we didn’t pursue in buying a costume for him. I am still making him bring the costume on Friday just in case.

What to wear?
I am one cramming mommy again. Just yesterday, Joshua arrived home with a memo from the school. They need to be in a Filipinana costume on the 27th for the culminating program of Buwan ng Wika. Aside from that, they also need to bring Filipino food good for 5. The food is no-brainer, I can just go ahead and buy sapin-sapin or any native delicacies readily available in the grocery store. What makes my head spin around is his costume. I dare not want him to wear the common Barong Tagalog nor the Camiso Chino with red pants. My cousin has a vest/pants costume that looks like a Maranao costume. He’ll fit it once I get home and if ever it doesn’t fit, good luck to Mommy!

Happy birthday!!!
My darling Claire,
You came by surprise to us. The moment we could finally see you, I though I lost you. I got knocked down after the operation and the last thing I heard was a faint cry. When I woke up, I wanted to see you badly. It has been an agonizing two days before I finally held you with my arms. I fell in love with you, and you have sucked my soul deep down.
You are a good baby. You didn't give me a hard time on your first three months. You sleep all through the night. Thank you. Seeing you so tiny and fragile, I decided to breastfeed you so long I can. I mustered all my strengths and sacrificed each single time to express my precious milk just for you. It came a surprise I lasted 8 months.
You are a sweet child. You loved to be cuddled and always wanted to be played with most especially with your Kuya and Dad. I thought you were prim and proper but you were getting louder and louder every single day.
You are an independent child. You are now showing independence. You rarely like to be held and carried. Instead, you want to explore on your own. You didn't mind all the bumps you get.
And as you turn one, I would like to say sorry. Sorry for we weren't able to give you a party you deserve. You'd know the reasons in time. I wish you wouldn't see us less of a parent someday.
Happy birthday my little darling. We will forever love you.

Everyday school baon
I can’t believe how time really flies so fast. Joshua has been in big school for more than two months now, turning three months when August ends. That means, he has been eating cookies and cupcakes and breads day after day, five times a week as his baon. I’m one mother who has lost all the ideas of what to give him for recess. Good thing I found an article written by Tita Amy sharing 10 gourmet pandesal baon treats for the kids.
10 Gourmet pandesal baon treats for your kids
School’s back! For moms, this could only mean one thing - a whole new year of facing the biggest challenge all mothers with school-age kids must deal with everyday: what baon to prepare for their growing kids.
As for me, the start of school takes me back to the late 70s when opening my fifth grade red and green checkered lunch box meant anticipating what treats could be found inside. However, despite holding my breath before opening it each time, my lunch kit held the same thing everyday: fresh calamansi juice. I don’t know what possessed my mom but she made me fresh calamansi juice everyday such that my Thermos jug smelled of freshly-squeezed calamansi even if it only had water in it.
And every single day, my daily calamansi juice came with one thing: a pandesal with some kind of filling in it. This was the 70's, a time when it was totally uncool to eat pandesal in school. The cool kids had sandwiches with different types of palaman (fillings) – ham and cheese, hotdogs, burgers, corned beef and luncheon meat. They were the rich kids—the ones who raved about having a taste of pizza pie (yes, it was known to be a pie back then), most likely from 3M. To keep my lowly pandesal from my seatmates’ condescending eyes, there was only thing I could do—gobble it up in two bites.
Fast forward some 30 years and I’ve had just about as much pizza as any grown woman could possibly eat or want. But the age-old question remains: what would your kid’s baon be today, tomorrow, and the day after that? The quick answer still is: a sandwich. Some bread with some kind of filling in it.
The only difference is that today, my pandesal and my sassy seatmate’s “tasty bread" a.k.a. American white bread could be whole wheat, 5-grain, sugar-free, even a snooty foccacia. And now, the variety of palaman to fill them with are just as mind-boggling, and hence, preparing our kids’ baon has become more challenging—and fun!
What type of bread should go with what type of palaman? Would peanut butter and jelly go well on foccacia? And the even bigger dilemma: is a sandwich enough to fill a growing child’s daily nutritional needs? Will a sandwich of barely-there ham and mayo sustain your kid through the challenges of the day? Can your kid show off and share his or her sandwich with his or her bestie (bestfriend)?
If I were to be a fifth-grader all over again and armed with my now grown-up knowledge of food and all things good and edible, my grubby hands would be reaching for gourmet sandwiches that are packed with flavor and of course, healthy. But even with all the different types of bread out there, my choice for bread still remains to be the humble pandesal, which can either be whole wheat or sugar free. It goes well with the calamansi juice that my Nanay Lily used to make and it can hold a motley of spreads and fillings that can take the pandesal to a new level of gourmet distinction.
Here are 10 Gourmet Pandesal ‘Wiches guaranteed to make any kid the toast of the class every recess time – all homemade and with very few processed ingredients:
1. CHICKEN ADOBO and KESONG PUTI
Spread some butter on each side of the pandesal and toast. Put a slice of kesong puti on the bottom side and top with shredded chicken adobo.
2. SMOKED SALMON
Whole-wheat pandesal with smoked salmon garnished lettuce, a slice of tomato and cucumber. Use cream cheese spread instead of mayonnaise on the pandesal slices.
3. GRILLED VEGETABLES
Slice a jumbo (oversized) pandesal into half. Mix two cloves of minced garlic into ¼ cup of mayonnaise. Grill some sliced eggplants, tomato, bell peppers and zucchini. Spread the garlic mayonnaise on each Panini slice and layer the grilled veggies on the sandwich.
4. TURKEY HAM
Whole wheat pandesal with turkey ham and low-fat mayo, lettuce, a slice of tomato and cucumber. Just make sure you don’t put just one thin slice of turkey ham on the sandwich—three would be just about right.
5. BEEFY BURGER
Make some homemade burger patties with lean ground beef, onions, minced garlic and carrots and season with pepper, salt, a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Top with a slice of low-fat cheese and garnish with lettuce, tomato and cucumber or a pickle.
6. PINOY BRUSCHETTA
Cut a pandesal into several ¼-inch thick slices (just like crostini slices). Mix some minced garlic into 2 tbsp of butter. Spread on the crostini-pandesal and toast. Combine cubed kesong puti, chopped tomatoes, minced garlic, ¼ tsp of dried basil, a dash of Italian seasoning and pepper, and 2-3 teaspoons of olive oil. Put the mixture in a small leak-proof plastic container. To eat, spread some of the tomato-kesong puti mixture onto the pandesal.
7. CHUNKY TUNA
Mix some flaked tuna (in water) with low-fat mayo, pickle relish and minced onions (not too much). Spread on the pandesal. May be served with lettuce and a slice of low-fat cheese.
8. CHICKEN GALANTINA
Make your own chicken galantina or embotido using ground chicken breast (500g), 3 tbps minced bell peppers, ¼ cup minced onions, ¼ cup minced carrots, ¼ cup grated cheese, 2 tbsps catsup, ¼ cup breadcrumbs, 2 tbps. flour and an egg. Season with salt and pepper. Shape mixture into an embotido on aluminum foil. Seal both ends well. Steam over boiling water for 40 minutes and let it cool. You may do this before hand and keep in the chiller until you are ready to make your sandwich. Slice your pandesal in half, spread some low-fat mayo on each side and put a ½ -inch slice of chicken galantina.
9. SPANISH SARDINES
Saute two tablespoons of chopped onions then put in the Spanish sardines. Spread low-fat mayonnaise on pandesal slices and put just enough of the Spanish sardines-onion mixture. Add a pickle slice or two if you like. You may serve with scrambled eggs on the side and tomato and cucumber slices.
10. CHICKEN PESTO
Of course, you can always just buy a bottle of pesto sauce in a grocery but it’s better to make your homemade pesto using chopped cashew nuts, basil, parmesan cheese, minced garlic and some olive oil. Put everything in a food processor, pulse and reduce to a spreadable mixture. Flake some cooked chicken breast. Spread homemade pesto on each slice of the pandesal and top with the flaked chicken.
The varieties of healthy baon treats for your kids are endless. Of course, it’s always easier to just make a corned beef or hotdog sandwich but it’s a good way to start them young on good eating habits. Train your kid to be a little gourmet eater and while you’re at it, put in a fruit cup, a banana, a bunch of grapes or sliced mangoes, papaya or melons in his or her lunch box. It’s a healthy way to sweeten your kids’ day and trust me, they’ll remember and love you more for it.
My breast is still the best
No need for an explanation why until now, even if not exclusively, I still breastfeed my little girl.
Breastfeeding, also called nursing, is an easy, inexpensive and healthy way to feed your infant. Recommendations are to breastfeed your newborn for the first 12 months of life because of the many benefits to both you and your baby. However, it's important to know that the American Academy of Pediatricians recommends breastfeeding for those women who don't have health problems.
Benefits to baby
Breastfeeding offers many benefits to your baby. Breast fed babies have lower rates of asthma, gastroenteritis, and ear infections, as well as higher levels of development and intelligence. Breast milk contains two specific fatty acids that may help increase the infant's brain development. Breast fed infants, and those who are fed expressed breast milk, have fewer deaths during the first year. Not only that, but breast fed infants have fewer illnesses than babies fed formula. Finally, breast milk helps prevent common childhood illnesses and infections.
Benefits to mom
Breastfeeding offers many benefits to you as a mother. These benefits include a more rapid return of uterine tone, postpartum weight loss, delay of ovulation, and decreased risk of breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers. There is evidence that indicates many mothers that breastfeed have fewer episodes of postpartum depression.
Lactation consultants
Breastfeeding offers many benefits to you and your baby. If you are breastfeeding and experiencing difficulty contact your health center, healthcare provider's office or hospital for help. A lactation consultant, someone trained to help women with breastfeeding, may be able to help you. Ask your healthcare provider for more information about getting help with breastfeeding.
When not to breastfeed
In certain situations, women are advised not to breastfeed. This may be due to certain health conditions, medicines or a chronic illness. It is always important to discuss with your healthcare provider how you plan to feed your baby.

Christmas gifts
Would you believe that as early as now, I am already scouting for gifts for Joshua’s teachers, teacher aide, classmates and CASA guards. Seriously! I have already listed a few items and if budget permits, these will materialize. I’m just having a hard time as to what to give to his classmates as they were 19 of them.
I found out this uber cute personalized keychain made from Polymer Clay. This was is from Poxee Shop.Ain’t it cute? I have already inquired about it and sad to say, I have to cross it out as a Christmas gift for his classmates. It’ll be expensive to order 19 pieces of it. But I’m thinking of giving this out though to my girl colleagues.
So, I have to look for alternative gifts for his classmates. On my list includes sugar cookies which I think is a very, very safe and common gift during Christmas. What else can we give? Any ideas?

1st Quarterly Exam
Because of what happened here, I make sure to check Joshua’s bag once I get home. Last Friday, I was really surprised as he didn’t bring his plastic envelope home. It’s only during Fridays that they bring the envelope home to show their parents the activity sheets they have done for the week as well as the assignments they need to finish during weekends.
Yesterday, after school, Joshua went home with the plastic envelope.
“Mom, Teacher Angel said to bring this back Monday next week.”
I browse all the folders and guess what! The very reason why the kids brought their envelope is for them to be reviewed by their parents or caregivers as they will be having their first quarterly exam on Wednesday until Friday (Language, Mathematics, Sensorial Arts and Cultural Arts).
Of course, I – the ever cramming, OC mother – made sure to browse the activity sheets and the assignment sheets and make a similar exam based on the reviewer notes. I photocopied it in three copies and ask my cousin/mother to review my kid once he gets home today.
I just wish he excel as this is the first time he’ll be experiencing such. Go Kuya Joshua! Make Mom, Dad and Claire proud of you.

3 pieces of ponkan
I was almost in panic yesterday night when out of the blue, I check my son’s school bag. You see, it was my mom who checks his bag right after school. I saw two letters. One is a reminder about our financial obligation to the school (aka: tuition fee dues) and other one is a note.
July 27, 2010
Good day!
We will be having our kitchen activity on Friday, July 30, 2010. Please bring the following:
3 pcs. of ponkan
1 tablespoon of sugar
1 plastic cup
Thank you!
For Pete’s sake! The letter was dated 27th of July. The letter was sitting all along in his bag. I forced the husband to go to the wet market or straight to the nearby grocery store to buy ponkans.
Lesson Learned: Always check your son’s bag.

A Child's Ten Commandments to Parents
I thought of sharing a forwarded mail to me.
1. My hands are small. Please don't expect perfection whenever I make a bed, draw a picture or throw a ball. My legs are short. Please slow down so that I can keep up with you.
2. My eyes have not seen the world as yours have. Please let me explore safely. Don't restrict me unnecessarily.
3. Housework will always be there. I'm only little for such a short time. Please take time to explain things to me about this wonderful world, and do so willingly.
4. My feelings are tender. Please be sensitive to my needs. Don't nag me all day long. (You wouldn't want to be nagged for your inquisitiveness.) Treat me as you would like to be treated.
5. I am a special gift from God. Please treasure me, holding me accountable for my actions, giving me guidelines to live by and disciplining me in a loving manner.
6. I need your encouragement and your praise to grow. Please go easy on the criticism. Remember, you can criticize the things I do without criticizing me.
7. Please give me the freedom to make decisions concerning myself. Permit me to fail so that I can learn from my mistakes. Then someday, I'll be prepared to make the kind of decisions life requires of me.
8. Please don't do things over for me. Somehow that makes me feel that my efforts didn't quite measure up to your expectations. I know it's hard, but please don't try to compare me with my brother or my sister.
9. Please don't be afraid to leave for a weekend together. Kids need vacations from parents, just as parents need vacations from kids. Besides, it's a great way to show us kids that your marriage is very special.
10. Please take me to worship regularly, setting a good example for me to follow.
I am guilty on some of those. I promised myself to be a better parent to my kids compared to how I am as a parent now.

Claire’s ATE
Claire has started to mumble a lot of stuff but I don’t get to count how many words she can say, unfortunately. She can say PAPA, MAMA, DEDE, LO (hello) and a lot of words. Sure thing you’d think I was the one she was referring to as MAMA – not! She calls me ATE. (a-te) She calls her stuff toy ATE.
ate: n.from chinese: ate. first born daughter. Nowadays in Tagalog it usually refers to an elder sister but is also used as a form to show familiar respect to someone no too much older than the speaker.
I came clear to me when we were on the bed and she was playing beside her dad. She crawled on my side, raise my shirt and says “ATE DEDE.” Hubby laughed when he heard it. Joshua even commented, “No, she is not ATE, she is our MOM.”

Project Photobook
I have only tried Artscow services once we I made a photo book which we gave as a gift to hubby's cousin's firstborn last December. The book didn't arrive in time though and only arrived here mid-January. When my husband saw it, he told me to make one for our kids. I'm trying my best and squeeze all my creative juices to make my firs born's book eye candy.
Here are a few pages of it. I'll be sharing only the cover and the back page as I know I'm not creative in any way or the other.

Claire’s (I mean my) wishlist
I’m already counting the days as in less than a month, my youngest is turning one. No party as it was my and hubby’s mutual decision not to throw one for her. Instead, we plan (still a plan though) to just go somewhere outside of the city and just chill. In our finances are overflowing, I would have loved to buy toys for her.

* Dog bone collar lights up to the music

* Helps baby understand connections between words and images

Sadly though, this is a far cry from reality. Well, I just wish her Ninongs and Ninangs would stumble upon this post and remember her on her birthday. Who knows, one of the toys I’ve been dreaming for her would be granted. It ain’t so bad to dream, right?

Claire @ 11 months
Whoa! In less than a month, my youngest, my princess, my doll, is turning one. Cliche as it may sound, but where did all the days and the months go? She can now walk a few steps without any support, save on the times when she walks in a hurry. She crawls fast and stands up without support too. She loved to eat table food as well. She now speaks a few words - “dada,” “mama,” “ate” to name a few. She loves to clap her hands, kiss you, lie on your tummy. She has 4 teeth now and thankfully still doesn’t bite mommy during nursing time.
From WhatToExpect
If there's trouble to be found, chances are your little one is on the hunt! Chances are your baby has developed an uncanny knack to get ahold of things he shouldn't have and get into places he shouldn't go. If he hasn't already done so, be prepared (with video camera on perpetual standby) for those first few steps as your child makes both physical and verbal strides this month. He loves games — especially those that involve pointing — and his interest in books will grow exponentially as he begins to comprehend more and recognize familiar pictures. A few things not to be concerned about: bowed legs (almost always normal and temporary); parental nudity (he doesn't care if you're naked as a jaybird as long as you're there!); and hitting milestones later than his peers. Remember, every baby is different and they master different skills — like standing and walking — at different ages. Children learn best and build confidence when you let them learn at their own pace, but if you're truly concerned, check with your pediatrician. More things to ask the doc: dietary questions, such as restricting fat and cholesterol in your baby's diet, and the best ways to ensure he gets the nutrients he needs. As for you, Mom, take a hint from your baby and get a move on, whether you're struggling with post pregnancy weight or not. Regular exercise will not only help you shed pounds, it'll boost your mood and help you sleep better at night. Now who wouldn't want that? |
Weaning from a bottle
When is the right time to wean your kid from a bottle? As you can see my oldest who is 4 years and 4 months, already a toddler, is still drinking his milk from the bottle. We have tried to introduce him to a cup, even buying a cute glass so to say, but it only lasted a month. When his sister arrived, he insisted to drink milk in his bottle.
As I don’t want to get stressed during that time, I agreed to what he wants. Now, we’re having difficulty to let him drink milk on a cup. We are noticing an increase in his milk intake. He is now drinking milk four times a day.
Here are some strategies I need to employ to completely wean him from his bottle:
- Offering milk in a cup before every bottle feeding.
- Weaning gradually.
- Leaving the morning bottle for last.
- Cuddle and explain.

Sibling rivalry in bloom?
I never thought at this early age my two kids would fight. I’m not sure if it’s a sibling rivalry in bloom as I always make sure to explain to Joshua why I need to prioritize Claire’s needs over him. However, lately, I always see him getting the toys his sister plays with.
Just yesterday, the husband advised me to talk to him for what he did to his sister. It happened he was playing with a plastic box and his sister crawled to him to get it. He gets mad and forced the box inside his sister’s mouth. The little girl’s lips turned to bloody red because of it.
We talked about it. I explained to him that his little sister still doesn’t know what she is doing, what she wants. Also, she is looking up to him as her Kuya so he better treat his sister well. I even explained to him that if he continues to hurt his sister, I’ll give away his sister to my mom.
Is this the start of something bigger in the future? Help! I don’t know what to do.

No class today
This is what we saw in AAM’s main gate when we bring Joshua to school today. Crap! We were so in a rush just to make it on time only to find out that there is no class today. I need no explanation as the area where the school is still doesn’t have electricity. Hello Meralco?! I’d have to advise Teacher Angel to text us if this happens the next time. It has been announced on TV that class’s resume today but the school didn’t inform us. Argh!

Hello BabyHaler
Long time no see, right? I have to rummage the back of Joshua’s closet just to find you, didn’t you know? I have forgotten you already. But it seemed you’ll be part of our every day life again for the next month.
The husband and I noticed our first born coughs every morning. It started last, last week so we immediately consult his pedia. Since the cough is only during the mornings, he was given Allerkid and Ventar. But after a week, his cough didn’t get well. Worst thing is, we hear him wheezing. So off we go to his pedia again for a follow-up consultation. The idea that is toying in my mind was confirmed by pedia. Indeed, his asthma come back. He was given an antiobiotic, Klaz, that he needs to take for the next seven days aside from the Seretide maintenance for one whole month.
He was absent for the first time in school yesterday as I wanted him to just rest. I let him watch movies in bed to avoid playing rough with my cousin. I was so strict with what he eats and forced him not to move at all. Haha! I prefer him that way just to avoid having asthma attack.

Breastfeeding struggle
Now that Claire's two upper incisors has erupted, breastfeeding her has always been a struggle for me. It isn't her first teeth though but it wasn't as painful as it is right now. Her upper teeth has started scraping my boobies that I usually dread the time to feed her. Most often than not, while I cling in pain, I gave her formula.
I really wanted to give up but having her nurse on me for the next two months would mean I was able to breastfeed her on her first year including the first eight months she was exclusively breastfeed.
I stumbled upon this article that offers tips for a mother who has the same situation as mine.
Breastfeeding a teething baby is possibly one of the greatest worries for breastfeeding mothers. Perhaps surprisingly, many mums feel pressurised by other people to stop breastfeeding as soon as the first tooth begins to break through.
People will express dismay, disgust and sheer incredulity if they think a mum will continue to breastfeed a baby with teeth.
Considering many babies get their first tooth somewhere between four and six months the choice to continue breastfeeding should not really be such a big deal.
Of course mums worry that their baby may bite but they can give quite a nip even before teeth appear. You can soon teach your baby to refrain from biting by simply placing a clean finger between the baby's gums and your nipple and saying "No" in a firm voice. The action will break the suction while the firm voice reinforces your message! You can also stop breastfeeding the baby momentarily and if you do this each time he bites he will soon realise that it is not such a good idea!
Sometimes the bite can take you by surprise and can be uncomfortable but in these instances you may find that you instinctively pull away and baby will learn the same lesson - if he bites he loses his lovely drink!
People may tell you horror stories about breastfeeding babies biting so hard that they drew blood. This is very rare.
Please remember that your baby is not consciously hurting you. Biting helps relieve the pressure on his teething gums and eases the pain a little. Babies will bite and chew at anything they can put to their mouths.Try giving your baby a teething toy or a teething ring which has been stored in the fridge - the cold will help numb the pain. Sometimes a teething gel such as Bonjela or Dentinox can help or you can try herbal remedies. Ask advice from your healthcare provider before giving any medications.
Sometimes breastfeeding babies bite when they are just playing - in the same way that a bottle-fed baby chews and pulls on the teat of the bottle.Your breastfed baby is simply experimenting and learning. He will very soon realise the rule of cause and effect and he will tire of it before too long!

Carl in the eyes of Teacher Angel
I was at AAM’s Parent Orientation earlier today. The program includes introduction of teachers and teacher aides as well as an introduction of what Montessori learning is all about. What I like most about the program is how they presented a glimpse of what’s happening in school, how they teach the kids. They point out that the Montessori way of learning is not to control the student to learn but instead control the environment where the student learns.
After the program, I was able to ask Teacher Angel how Joshua (or Carl for them) behaves in school. Here are her observations:
- He has good grip of the pencil and the colors. (thanks to his one year in a Day Care Center)
- He is independent. He doesn’t need assistance during break time; however he plays with his food first before eating it.
- He is talkative, he speaks loud. Also, he always talk to his seatmate (who happens to be a girl) even if his mouth is full.
- He understands English even if he isn’t an English speaker. They were using simple English to teach that’s why. Teacher Angel advised me to speak to him in English even at home so as to practice him.
- He listens but seldom repeats what he is doing if the teacher’s attention is not on him anymore.
One thing that really makes me blurt into laughter is him calling the teacher aide in a loud voice “Leah! Leah! Leah!” No miss, simply the name. He latter called the teacher aide Ms. Leah when he was told to call her that way. LOL!
That’s how he has been assessed by his teacher for the four weeks he has been attending school.

AAM Alma Mater Song
Joshua sings this every single day in school. No wonder, he was able to memorize it in a month time.
Hail alma mater hail
Ann Arbor Montessori
We your loving children
Will walk our way to glory
With all the grace of God
We pledge our faith and loyalty
Hail alma mater hail
The school we love so dear.

Sickies in the house
The kids are sick! I hear the Kuya coughing hard every morning. I’m thinking he already has phlegm. The Baby is restless as she can’t breathe properly due to her colds. Off we go to their pedia on Sunday for their check-up. We’d have to ask their pedia if he can administer the flu vaccine for Kuya as he is already due for it.
The hardest part of being a mom is seeing her kids sick. Cliche as it may sound, I wish the cough and the colds will be transferred to me. It tears my heart to see the kids suffer.

Mommy wants this!
Joshua has been attending Junior Casa at Ann Arbor Montessori for the past two weeks now. They have an earlier school opening compared to other schools. My husband’s cousin whose son also goes to that school advised us not to buy any bag (big bag on that matter) as there would be no notebooks or books to buy only activity sheets which are given to the kids on a daily basis.
And so, the husband and I decided not to buy another bag and opt to use the old backpack we bought last year when Joshua attended school in a day care center. But I’m starting to change my mind though when I saw Skip Hop Zoo Lunchies insulated bad. Perfect for my kiddo’s baon.
The downside is I can’t find any online shop here in this side of the world that sells this on-hand. All are pre-order.
I’m eyeing on two-designs for Joshua’s lunchbag: Dog or Penguin. An eye candy for the little tot =)

Guilty
I felt so bad and guilty today.
Earlier today, around 2 in the morning, after feeling something heavy on my foot, I heard a loud thud. I immediately went off the bed to see my little girl on the floor. She was awake although she cried when I blurted out her name.
The husband woke up too only to find out I was caressing my little girl chest while repeatedly saying I was sorry.
He got the little girl that made Claire cry louder, only to find out that she wants to be carried by me.
After a few minutes, she nursed on me and went back to sleep. At the moment, I asked my mom to check on her and see if there are changes on her moods and movements.
It was the first time ever a child of mine fell of the bed. Even when I am sleeping, I am still aware of their movements. I really felt bad now. I am scared. I felt guilty.

Panatang Makabayan
Woah! Thanks to my son who is in school, I have learned that there is a new version of our Panatang Makabayan. And so, I thought, I was teaching him the correct pledge. Lo and behold, it wasn't. Shame on me =)
Anyways, here is the old version of the Panatang Makabayan. This was the one I grew up with, reciting it daily after Lupang Hinirang during my elementary days' flag ceremony.
Panatang Makabayan
Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas
Ito ang aking lupang sinilangan
Ito ang tahanan ng aking lahi
Ako ay kanyang kinukupkop at tinutulungan
Upang maging malakas, maligaya at kapakipakinabang
On the other hand, here is the new version which my son and my daughter will grew up with.
Panatang Makabayan
Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas,
aking lupang sinilangan,
tahanan ng aking lahi;
kinukupkop ako at tinutulungan
maging malakas, masipag, at marangal.
Dahil mahal ko ang Pilipinas,
diringgin ko ang payo ng aking mga magulang,
susundin ko ang tuntunin ng paaralan,
tutuparin ko ang tungkulin ng mamamayang makabayan;
naglilingkod, nag-aaral, at nagdarasal
nang buong katapatan.
Iaalay ko ang aking buhay, pangarap, pagsisikap
sa bansang Pilipinas.

Throwing a fit
My husband and I have a quick movie date yesterday and watched “The Karate Kid.” What stuck to my head was how Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) taught Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) kung fu. The learning system revolved in by putting a jacket on, taking it off, hanging it up, and taking it down.
After the movie, I even joke the husband to teach our son how to be disciplined as I always receive calls from my mom every single day that the little boy is throwing a fit. I got all stressed up learning that even my mom can’t handle his attitude. He was always crying and screaming whenever he can’t get what he wants. If you scold him, he’d promise to behave but a few minutes after, here he goes again. I really don’t know what to do with him. I have tried to speak in mellow voice so as for him to understand that we were getting mad whenever he throws tantrums and for him to realize that he can’t get all he wants but to no avail. I had no choice but to put my voice in a higher tone to catch his attention and for him to follow me.
Wherever we are, we aren’t saved from shame as he’d wail on the top of his lungs whenever he wants a toy and wants to go to some place. I tell you, I have seen him lying on the floor (public places, i.e., mall) if we say “no” to whatever he wants.
He was really getting to be a hard headed boy. Good Lord, what shall I do?

Tigdas Hangin
Tigdas Hangin or Roseola Infantum is a fairly mild and common viral illness that usually strikes children between 6 months and 3 years of age. Roseola is caused by a kind of herpes virus, although not the type that's sexually transmitted.
My little girl has caught the virus and had high fever Monday night. We had administered Paracetamol to her every four hours as prescribed by her pedia. She had rashes on her buttocks which I thought was diaper rashes. Her fever was on and off and so on the third day, we gave her a bath before we head off to her pedia.
Indeed, the pedia confirmed it was tigdas hangin. There were no more fever but the rashes are more visible on her face and back. She is starting to have appetite again and isn’t anymore restless.
Get well my baby Claire.
Info regarding Roseola Infantum is found here.

The kids
Here is a recent picture of my two lovely kids before we attend church.Claire has been an active little girl and now blabs and blabs a lot. She now knows if she’ll be left behind as she would crawl towards me and would ask to be carried. If I’ll be giving her to my mom, she’ll turn her back and cling to me. She also eats a lot and can consume Earth’s Best Second Foods in one sitting – she really have a big appetite. She can say “mama” and “papa” at times. She is now trying to stand alone without support – of course we have to be alert all the time. We can’t even leave her alone even when she’s sleeping.
Joshua, on the other hand, has been a protective Kuya to his baby (he’s claiming Claire is his baby not ours). If they are lying on bed, he’d made sure his legs are on the edge of the bed to prevent his sister from falling. If he’s taking his milk, one of his hands is holding her sister’s legs. He doesn’t want her sister to fall down and even told the latter that if she falls down, she’ll be lying beside their Tito Dennis. He will be going to big school on Monday. Although, this isn’t his first time to go to school, I am still wishing and hoping and praying all is well and that he can easily adjust to a new environment. I am also wishing his English vocabulary would widen.

On Claire’s First Birthday
In less than a two months now, my little girl will be turning one. By this time, I should have been like the other mommies who are in full blast preparing for their kid's first birthday party. However, the husband and I agreed to shy away from the buzz of big parties and what not's. We wanted to keep the day simple and yet memorable for our small family.
We are now weighing options on how to celebrate it. Throwing even a simple party is not on our list. Even the most common Jollibee party is not also an option. Most probably, we will just go somewhere outside the skirts of the metro (it'll be rainy season on August) and spend the day there. What's important is for us to thank God for keeping my daughter safe for the first year of her life.
Should I feel guilty of not giving her a party?

The kids lately
They occupy the whole bed when sleeping! The husband and I had no choice but to sleep on both ends of the bed to prevent the kids from falling. And when they woke up, each of them has to have their bottle of milk.
Seeing them together gives me utmost happiness! It was always a bliss seeing them.

To the rescue
Yesterday has been so taxing for me and the little girl. Our day started a little bit early when I notice Claire being restless at four in the morning. She has been trying to nurse with me every single minute. I thought it was because of the weather. It was so hot even in the wee hour of the morning. By six in the morning, i felt she was a little hot than the usual. I took it as a cue and took her temperature. It was 37 degree celsius. I let her drink plenty of water.
By ten in the morning, her temperature still doesn’t change. Thank God for Kool Fever – the rescuer. During the duration of her fever, she is extra clingy to me – not wanting to be carried even her dad. She consumes little milk too and would really drink milk until the last drop if she sees her kuya drinking milk too.
And this morning, she is now back to normal. I can see the return of my bubbly Claire.
